Is Your Closet Calling You?

I recently left home for nearly two weeks and when I returned it was suddenly summertime in Indiana! Even as a professional Indiana Wardrobe Stylist, I had failed to clean out the heavy winter clothing in my closet or arrange summer staples. This moment reminded me of the importance of evaluating what’s in your closet on a consistent basis to see what still fits, what you like or don’t like, and what you might be missing.

We all have a key style that stays with us throughout our lifetime, but life sometimes adjusts that style.

  • Work changes (moving from a home office back to the a real office)
  • Retirement
  • Children
  • Relocation

That’s why I like to consistently take a little time to go over my closet, decide what needs I have, and then plan accordingly.

Study Your Accessories

Don’t forget to look at your accessory closet and evaluate belts, jewelry, purses and shoes. Shoes are an item I tend to change quite a lot. Maybe they aren’t as comfortable as last year or they’re now really out of style. I also may have just worn them out.

I do know that the perfect belt or purse really completes an outfit. Don’t make the mistake of not considering this as you stock your closet. Once I was traveling and attending a conference in Manila. The temperature was going to be in the mid-90s and I was looking for the perfect dress. I found a beautiful Robin’s Egg Blue dress that was both lightweight and beautiful. But it was the perfect straw belt that pulled it all off and it synched the waist perfectly. I must have done a great job styling it because one of my fellow image consultants wanted to take my photo.

Get the Right Hangers

Another important part of your closet to routinely evaluate is the hangers. Good hangers help organize your closet and keep your clothes free of wrinkles. I’d recommend velvet hangers like this one found at The Container Store or Target. Be sure to buy a large enough quantity that you can always match the colors of the clothes as you build out your closet.
