Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen!

When we think of sunscreen, it’s easy to associate it with long beach days, summer hikes, or afternoons by the pool. But protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays isn’t just a summertime concern — it’s a year-round responsibility. Daily sunscreen use is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain healthy skin and prevent long-term damage, regardless of the season. As a Personal Image Consultant, I want to emphasize the importance of healthy skin!

The Sun Doesn’t Take a Break

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun reaches the Earth 365 days a year, even on cloudy or cold days. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. That means you can still be exposed to damaging rays while walking to your car, sitting by a window, or enjoying a brisk winter walk. Snow, sand, and water can also reflect UV rays which increases your exposure. This all makes sunscreen just as important during a ski trip as it is at the beach.

UVA vs. UVB: What You Need to Know

There are two main types of UV rays to be aware of: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are responsible for premature aging — they penetrate the skin deeply and contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. These rays are present at consistent levels throughout the year and can even pass through glass. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and are strongest in the summer months. Both types contribute to skin cancer.

This is why a broad-spectrum sunscreen — one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays — is essential every day, not just during peak summer.

Personal Image Consultant Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer and Premature Aging

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world, and its primary cause is overexposure to UV radiation. Daily application of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher significantly reduces the risk of developing skin cancer.

Beyond cancer prevention, sunscreen is your best defense against premature aging. A 2013 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that people who used sunscreen daily had 24% less skin aging than those who didn’t. It’s one of the most affordable and effective anti-aging products out there.

How to Make Sunscreen Part of Your Daily Routine

Making sunscreen a habit is easier than it sounds. Choose a lightweight, non-greasy formula that suits your skin type and apply it every morning as the last step in your skincare routine. If you wear makeup, many foundations and moisturizers now come with SPF included — just make sure you’re applying enough to get the full benefit.

Don’t forget often-missed areas like your ears, neck, and the backs of your hands. And if you’re outdoors for extended periods, reapply every two hours.

Sunscreen is not just for summer — it’s for every day. Protecting your skin is a daily act of self-care that pays off in the long run. So whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or snowing, make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your morning ritual. Your skin will thank you for it.
