Does Your Style Really Matter?

I just returned from the AICI Global Conference in the Philippines! During the conference, I attended classes all day, where I learned new things and reviewed many existing ideas and skills. Even as an experienced Indiana Personal Stylist, I love to keep learning and expand my knowledge about style.

Style Insight from Your Indiana Personal Stylist

One of the conference classes focused on personal style, a subject stylists and the general population love to discuss. We all have inherent likes and dislikes about the clothes we wear and how we want to appear to the world. And while appearance does matter, so does being genuine and comfortable in your skin, which I refer to as style.

An interesting perspective I learned in the class presentation is that we all have a primary style. Here are the style types.

  • Natural Sporty
  • Classic Traditional
  • Romantic
  • Dramatic
  • Eclective (Creative)

We also possess a secondary style that’s cloaked in our primary style. For example, I’m primarily a Creative style since I like to match unusual color combinations together. But due to my lifestyle, which often involves me working out at the gym or running errands, I often feature Natural Sporty. But when I am working or going out, I revert to my primary Creative style.

Style Types in Action

I thought about what I learned at the conference when I recently took a client out shopping. We were in a place with multiple boutiques nearby. One was J.McLaughlin, a small American chain. It’s as classic as you can get with preppy colors and simple lines in pants, dresses, jackets, and jeans. There are also amazing accessories, including belts, bags, and shoes. But there isn’t a single item in the story that’s funky, different, or statement-making. After being at J.McLaughlin for a few minutes, I found myself gravitating towards The Secret Ingredient, a different store three doors away. A true Classic would enter this store, take one look, and exit immediately. But someone like me who loves sheer fabrics, denim with unusual touches, loud prints, tulle, and larger jewelry could spend quite a bit of cash there.
