What AICI CIC Means…
Recently, I was ecstatic to hear that an organization to which I belong, Association of Image Consultants International, told me I had met the requirements to say I am a AICI CIC (Certified Image Consultant). I was thrilled, and it was the end of many months of preparation that I reached this level. The Association of Image Consultants International (AICI) is the leading and largest professional association of personal and corporate image consultants worldwide. A non-profit organization, AICI is dedicated to advancing the level of professionalism and enhancing the recognition of image consultants.
I can now say I am Indianapolis’ only Certified Image Consultant who is a member of the Association of Image Consultants International. I am also honored to earn the Chicago Midwest Chapter Member of the Year for 2018. I currently serve as Vice President of Membership, and am President Elect — assuming my office next summer.
What Does an Image Consultant Do?
Our members counsel both individual and corporate clients on appearance, behavior, communication skills, etiquette and international protocol. As experts in image consulting, our members guide clients to achieve their specific goals with authenticity, credibility and confidence.
AICI is proud to have a membership of more than 1,000 professional image consultants, stylists and individuals related to the image industry and more than 3,000 global academic members who represent the future of the industry.
I wanted to explain why I think it’s important to have this training. Unlike many other fields, personal stylists and image consultants are not required to get a license or degrees to do what they do. Many gain experience by working in retail – which is a good avenue in which to learn – or rely on their artistic instincts to help others with their wardrobe. They may gain certificate-level training from various training avenues. This is all good.
Your Personal Image Consultant
I decided to take the more difficult route to get CIC from the AICI for my peace of mind – and to have the highest level of professionalization to offer. Throughout my career, I have always tried to accomplish that.
When I worked in communications and corporate public relations, I had a master’s degree in public relations. It was a very specific type of education that helped me in the specific field I worked in. I had to prove I was a proficient writer and knew how to function in the setting in which I worked.
When I decided to pursue Personal Styling, I decided to do the same. I was thrilled with my training with School of Style. They were based in West Hollywood and New York City, and certainly provided style training I never would have received in the Midwest where I live. I also wanted to offer color analysis and a level beyond merely styling, and that is why I joined AICI and started learning through that organization’s continuing education.
When I decided to take the Certified Image Consultant path, I knew it would be work: I had to pass an exam that covered communication, business etiquette, wardrobe styling, color analysis and design theory. Then, I had to prove my training met the qualifications. That’s when I completed an Image Consultant Class from the associaiton’s approved providers. Finally, put together a Portfolio that summarized my training, feedback from clients, background and other involvements in the image field such as being involved with the AICI Chicago Midwest Chapter board (it was 67 pages).
